The Charon 8R2 is a very simple 3G-SDI audio embedder/de-embedder, featuring two embedder/de-embedder modules.
Per module:
- Incoming 3G-SDI has audio channels 1-8 de-embedded. These are embedded to Dante output channels 1-8
- Incoming Dante channels 1-8 are embedded into 3G-SDI output
There are no controls on the Charon and audio is just passed simutaneously bi-directionally, 1 input to 1 output per module as above. This simplicity of operation is intentional for situations where basic 3G-SDI audio embed/de-embed functions are required without the excess functions of other units that inevitably cost more.
Network connections are fully redundant with primary and seconday connections via CAT5 copper Ethernet, or fibre via primary and secondary SFP cages.
At this time, tha Charon is 3G-SDI (SMPTE 424M) only, and 6G or 12G are not supported.
The SDI input and output is via 2 x 75ohm unbalanced BNC connectors.
The Charon 8R2 is available as a rack mount unit with 2 x VAC mains power supplies for redundancy.
It is standard with 2 embed/de-embed modules.

SDI information:
The Charon 8R2 supports de-embedding and embedding audio from/to an SDI video feed.
The Charon 8R2 can support speeds of 2.970Gb/s, 2.970/1.001Gb/s, 1.485Gb/s,
1.485/1.001Gb/s, and 270Mb/s and is compliant to SMPTE ST 425 (Level A and Level B), SMPTE ST 424, SMPTE 292 and SMPTE ST 259-C.
The SDI input supports typical equalized length of Belden 1694A cable up to:
- 200m at 2.97Gb/s
- 280m at 1.485Gb/s
- 500m at 270Mb/s
With the SDI output capable of typically driving at least 800mV at 75Ohms.
De-embedding
Each module of the Charon 8R2 can de-embed the first 8 channels of an SDI video stream.
Embedding
In accordance with SMPTE ST 272 and SMPTE ST 299, each module of the Charon can embed 8 channels of audio at 48kHz.
Note: A valid SDI video input signal must be present on the Input BNC connector of each module for the Charon 8R2 to be able to embed audio to an outgoing SDI video feed.
